President Donald Trump on Thursday presented what he described as compelling new evidence of foreign interference in U.S. elections, including alleged Chinese acquisition of American voter data, and warned of ongoing threats to the integrity of the 2026 midterm elections.
In a primetime address, Trump highlighted declassified intelligence documents that he ordered released on the White House website. The materials, according to the president, detail vulnerabilities in election infrastructure and efforts by foreign actors to influence electoral outcomes. Trump used strong language, referring to the 2020 election as “rigged and stolen” and accusing elements within the government of a cover-up to downplay China’s involvement.
Central to Trump’s presentation were claims that the Chinese government obtained approximately 220 million U.S. voter files over a five-year period beginning with the 2020 election cycle. He further alleged that raw intelligence from the FBI indicated Beijing attempted to manufacture illegal ballots in support of then-candidate Joe Biden. Trump also asserted that “deep state” actors worked to suppress information about the extent of foreign meddling.
The revelations drew sharply divided reactions. While some Republicans praised the disclosure and called for immediate legislative action, critics from both parties argued that the president failed to provide conclusive evidence of widespread fraud sufficient to undermine confidence in the electoral process.
Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) responded by calling for Trump’s impeachment, accusing the president of undermining free and fair elections. In a post on X, Markey stated, “Trump must be impeached for undermining and subverting our free and fair elections.” He continued by urging civic action, including protests, sit-ins, and withholding labor “when he sends ICE agents to the polls,” saying “everything must be on the table.”
Markey has previously advocated for Trump’s removal from office. In April, following Trump’s warnings to Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the senator described the president as “unstable” and a “clear and present danger,” urging invocation of the 25th Amendment and impeachment proceedings.
Democrats have long maintained that widespread voter fraud is not a significant issue in U.S. elections and have opposed many Republican-backed election security measures. Republicans counter that such resistance amounts to a cover-up that leaves the system vulnerable to exploitation.
On Friday morning, Republican lawmakers intensified calls to advance the SAVE America Act, which aims to strengthen election safeguards. Rep. Dan Meuser (R-PA) told Fox Business that the legislation enjoys broad public support and is essential for protecting electoral integrity.
The address has ignited renewed debate over election security as the nation approaches the 2026 midterms. Administration officials and lawmakers continue to weigh in on the declassified materials and their implications for future elections.
