šŸ˜žPaul Threatens Fauci for Pleading 5th in Hearing, Removes Fauci’s Attorney

Republican lawmakers are pressing for closer examination of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s decisions and public statements during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fauci declined to answer questions Wednesday from members of a Senate committee about his role as the nation’s leading infectious disease official. Committee Chairman Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., opened the hearing by criticizing Fauci and warning of possible consequences after the former official invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.

Paul asked whether Fauci had changed his view on the risks and benefits of gain-of-function research. Fauci responded: ā€œOn the advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer, based upon my rights under the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution.ā€

Paul noted that the committee had rejected the privilege claim and directed Fauci to answer, citing an existing presidential pardon. ā€œThe committee will have to consider, after this hearing, what appropriate action should be taken against you for the failure to testify after being directed to do so,ā€ Paul said. ā€œIt’s against the law to obstruct an investigation of Congress. There will be repercussions to your refusal to testify today.ā€

Paul has previously argued that Fauci should face criminal charges for alleged false statements to Congress dating to 2021. In a September 2021 interview, Paul said such lies constitute a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and warned that public officials who mislead the public undermine trust.

Tensions rose further when Paul ordered the removal of one of Fauci’s attorneys. The lawyer had repeatedly interrupted despite not being recognized to speak. ā€œYou will respect these proceedings,ā€ Paul said. ā€œYou were told not to sit at the table. … You are being disruptive.ā€ After additional interruptions, security escorted the attorney from the room.

Before the hearing, President Donald Trump criticized Fauci’s record in a Truth Social post. Trump called Operation Warp Speed ā€œa SPECTACULAR SUCCESSā€ and said he had overruled Fauci on several matters. He described Fauci’s early guidance on masks as inconsistent and stated that he had prevented Fauci from shutting down the country.

The hearing underscored ongoing Republican efforts to revisit pandemic-era policies and accountability for federal health officials.
