As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its founding, Washington, D.C., is preparing for one of the largest Independence Day celebrations in the nation’s history despite extreme heat, potential thunderstorms, and political controversy surrounding the event.
The celebration, officially titled the Salute to America 250 Celebrations & Fireworks, will feature a full day of military flyovers, live entertainment, and what organizers say could be the largest fireworks display ever staged for the holiday. Military aircraft are scheduled to fly over the nation’s capital every hour beginning at 1:15 p.m. local time until sunset. President Donald Trump’s new Air Force One is also expected to participate in one of the aerial formations.
The main festivities are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. local time, with President Trump expected to address the crowd at approximately 9:45 p.m. The president has said he plans to deliver a lengthy Fourth of July speech, joking that he intends to prove he can withstand the intense summer heat.
However, the celebration comes as much of the eastern and central United States remains under a dangerous heatwave, with temperatures reaching around 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). The National Weather Service has also warned that evening thunderstorms could affect outdoor events in the capital.
The extreme weather has already disrupted several Independence Day activities. The National Park Service canceled its annual Independence Day Parade in Washington, citing public safety concerns. Additional celebrations have been called off in parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Colorado because of the hazardous conditions.
The White House-backed public-private partnership organizing the event has also faced criticism from opponents who argue the celebration has become overly political. Several musical performers reportedly withdrew from the program shortly after being announced.
President Trump further fueled the political debate during remarks delivered Friday evening at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. In his speech, he warned that America’s identity is being threatened by what he described as domestic “radicals,” “extremists,” and a renewed “communist menace.” His remarks echoed a central Republican campaign message ahead of the November midterm elections, with party leaders continuing to portray Democrats as embracing socialist or communist policies.
Despite the challenges posed by severe weather and political divisions, organizers expect thousands of spectators to gather in Washington for the historic anniversary celebration commemorating 250 years of American independence.
